Residents Celebrate One Year of Serving Smoke-Free Air in NC with “$2 off Tasty Tuesdays”

Wentworth, Thursday, December 30th, 2010 – You are formally invited to celebrate the first birthday of the Smoke-Free Bars and Restaurant Law in North Carolina. As of Sunday, January 2nd, 2011, Rockingham County residents have enjoyed one year of restaurants and bars serving up smoke-free air, without the health hazards of tobacco smoke.

“The smoke-free law protects not only customers but workers as well, from the known health hazards of secondhand smoke. We really feel that the new safer environments have and will continue to encourage many people to eat out more than ever,” said Glenn L. Martin, Health Director, Rockingham County Department of Public Health (RCDPH).

Many communities around the state are hosting local events to celebrate the first birthday of the smoke-free restaurants and bars law in North Carolina. Unfortunately, many people have forgotten the reason for the clean, smoke-free eating environments and this initiative is geared toward bringing the law back to light.

To celebrate being one year smoke-free and increase awareness of the smoke free environments, residents of Rockingham County are encouraged to eat out each Tuesday during the month of January – for breakfast, lunch or dinner to celebrate smoke-free restaurants and bars. Many local restaurants are participating in Rockingham County’s “$2 off Tasty Tuesdays” event during the month in an effort to get people out eating and enjoying the smoke-free environments. The concept of “$2 off Tasty Tuesdays” is simple. Visit and become a fan of RCDPH’s Facebook page (search Rockingham County Department of Public Health on Facebook to find our page) to print your coupon.  Take the coupon to your favorite, participating restaurant any Tuesday in January and receive $2 off your meal purchase of $8 or more (other restrictions apply, see coupon for details).

Participating restaurants include:

Eden: Big Mike’s Grill, Chaney’s, China Wok, Elizabeth’s Pizza, El Parral, Jerry’s, King’s Inn Pizza, Pizza Hut (Not Valid on Buffett purchase), Railroad Café, Red River, Rio Grande, Santana’s, Tee’s Pizza, Whistle Jacket.

“Eating out is the best way to say, ‘thanks from the bottom of our lungs,’ to all those who helped create a healthier, smoke-free environment for North Carolinians and visitors dining in our great state,” said Katrina White, Health Education Program Manager, Rockingham County Department of Public Health. “We anticipate that $2 off Tasty Tuesdays will remind people to appreciate the clean, smoke-free eating environments while bringing business to Rockingham County’s restaurants.”
